#MinnieStyle Lookbook for National Polka Dot Day

Disney Style, Style

Happy #NationalPolkaDotDay!šŸ”“āšŖļøāš«ļø Polka dots are pretty much synonymous with Minnie Mouse, so itā€™s no surprise that many Disney fans celebrate Minnie and her iconic style today. In past posts, Iā€™ve talked about how I used to shy away from #MinnieStyle for the fear of coming off as too girly, which often reads as childish as an Asian American woman. But now that Iā€™m older, Iā€™ve become more comfortable with wearing girlier, feminine outfits that still feel like me.

And even though today is supposed to be all about dots, Iā€™ve decided use today as a great opportunity to highlight #MinnieStyle altogether. So here are a few fun ways to #RockTheDots and honor Minnieā€™s timeless style!

When Eggie, a clothing brand by Asian American YouTuber Jenn Im, dropped their Disney collection, I fell in love with this blazer and skirt set. From afar it looks like an irregular pinstripe, but itā€™s actually Minnieā€™s signature!šŸ¤© I adore how the subtle print makes a usually stuff blazer more playful. And since we adore a themed outfit, I paired the set with the Uniqlo x Ambush Minnie Mouse bag. Itā€™s reminiscent of the Christopher Raeburn Mickey and Minnie bags, but it was much more affordable. To stay warm, I layered up with Eggieā€™s bodysuit from the same Disney collection, a pair of tights, and some chunky boots. And I couldnā€™t forget my favorite upcycled Gucci mask!

Another piece I immediately bought from the Uniqlo x Ambush Disney collection was this embroidered Minnie T-shirt dress. I practically live in this dress and shouldā€™ve bought two because itā€™s already getting pilly.šŸ˜… Itā€™s basically a cute and comfy cotton mumu, so itā€™s obviously been my go-to quarantine uniform. To add a few dots into the mix, I wore Baublebarā€™s Minnie dangle earrings and a velvet dot scrunchie. And a #MinnieStyle outfit almost always calls for a bright red lip.šŸ’„ Iā€™m loving how luxe this Pat McGrath lipstick feels!

Dress: Reformation, Minnie bag: Aldo, Bag strap: Parc Pack, Sunglasses: Gucci, Mask: iluvit

For the last outfit in this lookbook, weā€™re going full throttle with dots!šŸ”“āšŖļøšŸ”“āšŖļø Thank goodness red dot dresses were trending in the last couple of years because now itā€™s fairly easy to find a #MinnieStyle dress that fits my style. This Reformation dress feels so Parisian and will really stand the test of time. But to level up on the dots, I decided to wear this fun (and obnoxious) Minnie bag with a Parc Pack red dot bag strap. When wearing dot on dot, I like to mix the size and proportions of the dot patterns so overall, itā€™s not too overwhelming.

Whatā€™s your favorite way to #RockTheDots or don #MinnieStyle? Iā€™m glad over the years, Iā€™ve come to embrace Minnieā€™s look. Itā€™s a great reminder that I shouldnā€™t shy away from styles just because they donā€™t seem to fit me at face value. If anything, I can use my creativity to be inspired by those styles and put together outfits that still feel like me. So hereā€™s to Minnie me!ā¤ļøšŸ˜†

šŸ’–Galentine’s Day Gift Guide for Disney Lovers

Musings, Spotlight

Chocolates and roses are nice, but your gal pals are extraordinary and deserve something just as special!  For me, I actually met many of my close friends through our love for Disney.  So I was excited to think about what kind of small Disney gifts I could give to friends this Valentine’s Day! If you have Disney friends in your life, here are some great Galentine’s Day gifts they’ll love!

1. Disney Headbands

We’ve seen these cute headbands make their way to the US parks after their popularity spiked at Tokyo Disney Resort.  I’ve definitely started quite the collection.šŸ˜†  But I especially love the ones from BooHoo because you can also find fun Disney PJs for you and your bestie!

2. Park Photo Session

Since I met many of my close friends through social media, booking a mini photoshoot with a friend is such a fun way to bond and get some memorable photos!  I highly recommend Edwin and Kevin, who both have an amazing eye for getting that unforgettable shot!šŸ“ø

3. Disney DIY Earrings

I’m not super crafty, but if you’re wanting something truly unique for your one of a kind friend, try DIY’ing the most extra Disney earrings!  Erika’s DIYs are so clever and her tutorials are super easy to follow!

4. DisneyBound Book

As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I met many of my close friends because of our love for Disney.  But more specifically, I met many through DisneyBounding! And honestly, we’ve become so close because DisneyBounding is such a great way to bond and get to know new people! If your friend is unfamiliar with DisneyBound, the official DisneyBound book is the perfect introduction!

5. Basin Soaps and Bath Bombs

If you want to pamper your bestie, consider getting them some soaps or bath bombs! And for the Disney lover, the only thing that makes luxurious bath bombs even better, is a bit of Disney magic. I especially love visiting the Basin store at Disney Springs because they have SO many cute Disney designs!

6. Disney Luggage Tags

It’s no surprise that I love a fun Disney trip. And I can never say no to a Disney trip with friends! So show your Galentine how excited you are for your friends getaway with a Disney luggage tag! I love these Mickey and Minnie ones from American Tourister!

7. Wishable

I’m not usually a plushie person, but I couldn’t resist the spam musubi and shave ice Wishables from Aulani! Because Wishable are blind bags, it would be so fun to have a Charlie and Grandpa moment, Ć  la the Chocolate Factory, with your bestie and open them up together! Sorry, no lifetime supply of chocolate, but you get a lifetime supply friendship!šŸ˜†

Getting a little something for your friends is always a kind gesture, but it can never replace the emotional support and quality time that you and your friend give to each other. So this Galentine’s Day, don’t forget to tell your friend how much you appreciate them and make some fun memories together!šŸ’–

#CityDisneyStyle: 3 Tips to Finding the Perfect Dressy Disney Bag

Disney Style, Style

With the holidays upon us, so to are the numerous dressy parties and gatherings.Ā  And adding a touch of Disney flair to your dressier outfits is a piece of cake with a Disney bag!šŸ‘œĀ  It’s just another way to bring Disney magic out of the parks and I love how it adds that unexpected touch of magic.āœØ

Here are some tips on choosing the right bag to compliment your dressy, festive outfit!

Tip 1: Find a bag that can be carried as a tophandle or clutch!Ā  These kinds of bags tend to be dressier than a backpack, fannypack, or crossbody since they don’t obstruct your beautiful outfit that you worked so hard to put together!Ā Ā Conversly, if you feel like your outfit looks too fancy and needs a little edge, try adding a more casual bag!

Tip 2: Try to veer away from bags that use more casual materials, such as canvas, and go for something that looks a little luxe, like faux leather or faux fur!Ā  Hard case bags, like this Pixar tophandle ball, also tend to look dressier because it has structure.Ā  And nice, quality hardware also help elevate the overall look of the bag.

Tip 3:Ā A more “basic” Disney bag can easily pair with fun prints!Ā  Because let’s face it, you probably have some fun prints in your closet and it can be hard to find that bag pairing.Ā  I always have difficulty mixing prints and patterns, so my default is to carry a solid bag!Ā  Preferably in black.šŸ–¤šŸ˜†

Now that you have some tips on what Disney bags can complete your dressy outfits, go out and be your fanciest, festive Disney Style self!

5 Favorite 2017 Disney Collaborations

Disney Style, Musings, Style

san francisco golden gate bridge mickey mouse disney styleIt’s the last day of the year and instead of making a list of practical resolutions, like how I should save more money, I’m instead reminiscing on the all the ways I wanted to spend my money this past year – aka my five favorite 2017 Disney collaborations!Ā  There were so many great Disney collaborations that debuted this year, but I’ll mostly be focusing on apparel collabs because there’s no better way to show your Disney pride than to have it plastered all over your body. šŸ˜¬

Coach x Disney

Last year, Coach released a special Mickey collection that sold out INSTANTLY.Ā  I went to a Coach store around 1pm the day it released and the store was literally down to it’s last few items for each style.Ā  So this year, Coach released another Mickey collaboration only in their outlet stores.Ā  The assortment was reminiscent of the original collection, but included a lot more styles and variety.Ā  You best believe I snatched up a bunch of the bags and maybe a jacket…or two. Well, one of the jackets was gifted to me, so that doesn’t count.Ā  But regardless, this was probably my favorite collaboration of the year.Ā  I wear those Coach x Disney bagsĀ soĀ often and the jackets I’ll keep forever!mickey mouse disney style coach sugar cookie disney eats food

UNIQLO x Olympia Le-Tan ā€œMinnie Mouse Loves Dotsā€

Another collection I loved was the UNIQLO x Olympia Le-Tan ā€œMinnie Mouse Loves Dotsā€ collection.Ā  I’m usually more of a Mickey lover, but the Minnie graphics were too cute to pass up.Ā  I especially loved the embroidered details that tied all of the pieces together.Ā  I’ll admit, some of the shirts were too sweet for my taste, but I fell in love with the cropped tattoo-esque shirts with Minnie’s face and banners flanking each side of the collar.Ā  I loved it so much, I picked up both the black and red colorways.Ā  I also picked up a couple of the bags, but my favorite is probably the red structured Minnie bag.minnie mouse style uniqlo zara san francisco disney style

Arezzo

This one, I’m quite sad about because THEY ARE ONLY SOLD IN BRAZIL.šŸ˜šŸ˜« I was actually so close to snagging something from this collection thanks to a sweet friend that offered to pick it up for me.Ā  But I guess it wasn’t meant to be because my size was sold out in almost everything.Ā  Anyways, Arezzo is a Brazilian shoe brand that released a super diverse Mickey inspired collection.Ā  The range included espadrilles, classic pumps, and trendy slides.Ā  I especially wanted the yellow Mickey ear slides because they areĀ perfect for a Mickey disneybound and add that great pop of color to everyday outfits.Ā  Hopefully, someone out in the world is re-selling theirs!šŸ™šŸ»

Cakeworthy

Cakeworthy released it’s first official licensed Disney collection earlier this fall and it is amazing.Ā  Cakeworthy always delivers the coolest Disney streetwear clothes around.Ā  Compared to many other small apparel businesses that create Disney-inspired clothes, Cakeworthy items always have that unique punk edge.Ā  I immediately loved the Neverland denim embroidered jacket and the novelty Mickey pizza bag.Ā  Both are a little out there, but super special pieces that can’t be found anywhere else.Ā  I’ve known the brains behind Cakeworthy for a few years now and they are amazing people.Ā  They always find that one thing that Disney fans want but doesn’t actually exist, and then make it into a reality.Ā  Their ability to identify the white space within the Disney apparel world is what puts them ahead of the rest.mickey mouse disney style true original 90 birthday levi's levi

Pendleton

I know this one isn’t necessarily clothing, but I had to add it in after my boyfriend so thoughtfully gifted me the Pendleton Mickey wool blanket for Christmas!Ā  After seeing it as part of a Disney Style gift guide, I immediate knew I had to have it.Ā  Ā  They also released a few kids’ throws which are adorable for families with younger children.Ā  But for the adult that’s young at heart, the Mickey’s Salute throw is perfection.Ā  It’s the ideal mix of Pendleton’s classic geo patterns and old school Disney charm.Ā  And I am a total sucker for that timeless Mickey.Ā  If I ever end up not using it (stab me if that ever does happen though because that would be a heinous crime committed against this blanket), I love the idea of framing it and making it this huge piece of artwork to hang on the wall!

So those are my top five favorite Disney collaborations from this year!Ā  There definitely was a huge number of Disney collections, but these were the few that I really coveted.Ā  And the fact that I had to narrow down my choices is exciting!Ā  Compared to 2016, I felt 2017 was the year many designers and companies finally realized that people love Disney and Disney products!Ā  Within the past few years, I think more people are finally comfortable showing their love for Disney in everyday life – namely in apparel!

I could be completely wrong on this, but I feel like Disney lovers would wear all their gear in the park or to some kind of Disney event, but that’s the only “acceptable” time to sport it.Ā  But nowadays, I walk around work and see other co-workers wearing their Star Wars sweater or a Mickey shirt and I get a little excited.Ā  I think we’re coming into an age of “Screw it.Ā  This is something I love, so I’m going to wear it.”Ā  And now more than ever, people are braver about showing off the things they love.Ā  And in terms of showing off Disney Style, I’m all for it.ā¤ļø

Cheers to a great 2018!šŸŽ‰Ā  And to more Disney collaborations!šŸ

Spotlight: Keiki Collection

Musings, Spotlight

IMG_2862

Earlier this month, I hopped over to Hawaii to spend some quality time (read: eating time) with my sister and mom. Ā Over the weekend, we decided to eat at Scratch Kitchen and Meatery. Ā Before talking about the Keiki Collection, you have to know something.Ā Ā If you’re ever in the area,Ā youĀ HAVE to try at least one of Ā the “Pimp My Grits” dishes from Scratch Kitchen. Ā Just…ugh…so good. Ā A quick pic and then we’ll move on:IMG_2848

To walk off this amazing, but super heavy grits, weĀ decided to shopĀ around South Shore Market. Ā Picked up a copy of Alexa Chung’sĀ ItĀ and a pair of delicate rose gold heart earrings, but the best pleasant surprise was running into a small pop-up shop fromĀ Keiki Collection. Ā Keiki Collection is a community of kids that learn how to sell their handmade goods. Ā But weĀ should honestlyĀ call them mini #Girlbosses.šŸ’šŸæšŸ’šŸ¾šŸ’šŸ½šŸ’šŸ»šŸ’šŸ¼ Ā Sidenote: There are young boys in the group too, but none were there that day.

IMG_2852I remember when I was younger, my mom and I would do the same thing. Ā We’d figure out what kind of crafts we could make to then sell at school holiday craft fairs. Ā I loved working away making tons of colorful lanyards and decorating hair claws with Christmas tinsel. Ā It was so fun toĀ be creativeĀ and I felt so “official”Ā when we sold them. Ā And we probably barely broke even each time because everything was pretty much under $5. Ā But I love that these girls are creating something that they’re proud of and then learning business skills to sell them. Ā Things you don’t necessarily learn in school these days.

IMG_2865I was most impressed by one girl that made large macrame hanging pot holders. Ā They were just so impeccably made! Ā I was so impressed that I ended up buying one even though I don’t really have a place to put it.šŸ˜… Ā But it’s a small price to pay to support a young mini girlboss though, right?šŸ¤—

We tried our best to buyĀ a little something from each person. Ā These girls are learning the basics of business and entrepreneurship and that’s just something we had to support. Ā And Hawaii in general has a pretty diverse population, but can we take a second to recognize that this was also an ethnically diverse group of girls!! Ā I mean, COME ON! Ā It’s just so amazing to see young girls of color learning to be entrepreneurs, creatives, and supportive of one another. Ā It warms my soouuull.šŸ’•

IMG_2863If you can, give Keiki Collection a follow on instagram. Ā They have occasional pop-ups like this one around the island. Ā Let them know what they’re doing is impressive and important — not only as a young female, but also as a person of color.
